In 1981, a group of young people, who had been in North America for just over a decade, decided to take the plunge and start the magazine they had always dreamed about as students, at a time when books by Naipaul let alone Narayan or Ngugi or Soyinka had to be ordered from publishers. The result was The Toronto South Asian Review which helped entrench a generation of new writers, and was so successful that it could never put the brakes on. TSAR Publications, then, came naturally as a book-publishing, arms-length venture of the company, to publish new Canadian and American (regardless of ethnic origin) as well as world writing.
